|INSTITUTE FOR SOLAR LIVING
California, is on its way to producing more photovoltaic
energy per capita than any other region in the world.
a building of sweeping beauty, positioned to take advantage
of sun in all its seasonal phases. Picture offices and a 5,000-square-foot
retail showroom powered entirely by the sun and wind. Youre
picturing Real Goods Institute for Solar Living, designed
by architect Sim Van der Ryn and the Real Goods Design &
Consulting Group lead by Manager Jeff Oldham. The ISL is supported
by a hybrid power system we designed and installed, made up
of 10kW of Siemens photovoltaic modules and a 3kW Whisper
wind generator on an 80-foot tower. We incorporated active
and passive solar design, creating exquisite daylight and
making our solar powered fluorescent lighting almost redundant.
The straw bale construction performs so well that the building
has no mechanical systems. Other features include recycled
materials, nontoxic finishes, a solar water pumping system
and a greywater irrigation system.
The store sales witnessed a doubling in volume after the move into this new location from just a mile up the road that had better visibility and access.
Jeff Oldham, Project Manager
Ever since I attended the grand opening of the Solar Living Center, Ive deeply involved myself in the area of ecological design. I consider the event a turning point in my life, and I want to thank you for it. The people, the actions. . . it all felt right, guilt-free, life enhancing, healing. Again, thank you
